Air Force Lt. Col. John P. Cahill Jr
writes, "Air Force Lt. Col. John P. Cahill Jr. has retired from the U.S. Air Force after more than 32 years of military service."
His retirement ceremony was conducted at the historic Museum of Aviaton, Century of Flight Hangar in Warner Robins, Ga.
Prior to retiring, Cahill served as the Instructor/Evaluator Mission Crew Commander for the 330th Combat Training Squadron at Robins Air Force Base, Warner Robins. He also served as the Chief of Staff and Assistant Director of Operations in the 16th Airborne Command and Control Squadron.
Cahill joined the Air Force in 1969 as an enlisted member and was later accepted to attend Officer Training School, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating in 1978.
He has served in numerous positions and locations, which included two tours to Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, Va.; Clark Air Base, Philippines; Cam Rahn Bay Air Base, South Vietnam; Charleston Air Force Base, S.C.; two tours to Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.; Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.; Kalkar Air Station and North Atlantic Treaty Organization Airbase Geilenkirchen, Germany; Key West, Florida; and Maxwell Air Force Base-Gunter Annex, Ala.; and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in support of the war against global terrorism outside the borders of the U.S.
Some of his major military decorations include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of he Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, four awards of the Vietnam Service Medal, two awards of the Southwest Asia Service Medal, both the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Kuwait and Saudi Arabia Liberation Medals.
The colonel is a master air battle manager with more than 4,700 flight hours, including 1,000 combat hours, on board C-130, C-141, E-3, and E-8 aircraft.
He hails from Sayre, Pa., and is the brother of Patricia A. Parr of Ackley Road, Lockwood, N.Y., Theresa M. Hughes of Maple St., Sayre, and Mary L. King of Rural Route 2, Athens, Pa.
His wife of more than 30 years, the former Suzanne Picard, is the daughter of Arthur J. and Eleanor E. Picard of Pine Terrace, Plantation, Fla. Cahill and his wife have two daughters, Shannon Marie and Kelly Anne.
In 1967, he graduated from Waverly High School, N.Y., and received a bachelor's degree in 1977 from State University of New York at Cortland. The lieutenant colonel earned a master's degree in 1986 from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
